What Is Piano Restoration?

Restoration is the fine art of refurbishing aged, worn-out traditional acoustic pianos to their former glory by repairing or replacing broken or damaged parts with the original or similar quality.

All age-affected felts are changed, as well as leather, springs, loops, centre-pins, tuning pins and strings etc., to enable the piano to mechanically perform as well as when it was new. This is the repairs to and restoration of all internal parts and includes, but is not limited to:

Soundboard restoration;
Restringing and re-pinning of the frame;
Restoration of the piano action;
Restoration of the damper system;
Restoration of the keyboard;
Restoration of the pedal system;
Stretching strings and raising to pitch;
Fine tuning the piano to concert pitch;
Perform piano regulation on all mechanical systems.

Exterior Piano Restoration

This is all the restoration on the outside of the piano and includes, but is not limited to:

External woodwork repairs;
Replacing steel castors or dollies;
Stripping down, re-spray and re-polish the cabinet to reveal the natural original wood grain finish;
Replacing or repairing piano locks.

Is my piano worth restoring?

If it is soundly built;
If possible built by a well-known maker;
Preferably built after the 1890's;
It must rather be an overstrung than straightstrung;
It must rather be an underdamper than overdamper;
You must also like the piano.

What does a piano restoration cost?

That will depend on the type, age and condition of the piano, and we would need to see the piano in order to be able to give you a quotation for the restoration work.
