Establishment Of Kallie Swanepoel Piano Tuners
Kallie Swanepoel begins his piano tuning training in 1991 at the Institute for the Blind in Worcester. He receives his diploma in piano tuning at the end of 1993, after which he completes a year-long apprenticeship with established piano tuners in Springs and Potchefstroom. A practical exam follows, which enables him to become a member of the
South African Association of Professional Piano Tuners.
Brimming with more courage than wisdom, Kallie hires a store room at the beginning of 1995 from where he operates a very small piano tuning practise. He hires a personal assistant to handle phone calls and receive clients. He soon finds that Worcester and surrounds lack the demand necessary to sustain a worthwhile business and he decides to move to Pretoria. The
South African Association of Professional Piano Tuners advise him to rather establish a business in Port Elizabeth. This he eventually does, but only after working as a marketing manager for a marketing firm during 1996.
On the advice of the
South African Association of Professional Piano Tuners, Kallie leaves Worcester in 1997 to establish a piano tuning practise, not in Pretoria, but in Port Elizabeth. For the next two years he engages in a fight for economical survival, during which he gains nothing but wisdom and experience. The young piano tuner is often confronted with substantial challenges that have to be dealt with, and he quickly learns from these experiences.
Nothing much happens in the world of pianos during 1999. Kallie is accepted to attend a computer course in Pretoria and consequently moves to the Jacaranda City where he successfully completes two computer courses. He accepts a position at a small IT company and works hard at gaining as much experience in this new field as possible. During this time he gradually builds a client base, and works as a piano tuner in his spare time.
Kallie works for a large banking group from 2000 to 2002 in Pretoria and only practises as a piano tuner after hours to earn an extra income. During this time he gains a reputation for performing excellent work and becomes widely known as someone with a great passion for the piano tuning industry. Piano maintenance and the demand for this service grows to such an extent that he feels bound to leave the banking industry so that he may devote all his attention to piano tuning.
This young and dynamic piano tuning company is established in January 2003 in Pretoria with three staff members. This includes the owner, Kallie Swanepoel, and two assistants. Subcontractors are used from time to time to carry out repairs and re-polishing of piano cabinets. Loyalty and hard work has caused the company to quickly grow into a strong entity, which offers a high quality service not only to the piano playing community in Pretoria and surrounding areas, but also to the rest of Gauteng, North West, Mpumalanga and Limpopo provinces - and even Botswana. Well-known institutions such as the University of Pretoria and the State Theatre, famous musicians and a host of music teachers make use of Kallie's services. Several churches and schools are clients, but the majority of Kallie's business still comes from private individuals. The company also contributes to the economy by regularly attending diverse expos such as the Pretoria Show and the Homemakers Fair to promote the piano tuning industry and to raise public awareness of piano related issues.
